Attractions & Activities
Buffalo Beach in Whitianga is perhaps the most well known
beach in Mercury Bay with safe swimming and a long sweep of
sand.
There are fish to catch and shellfish to gather; the relatively
sheltered waters of the bay are great for all water sports.
On land there are bush walks,
horse trekking, tours, adventures, shopping & restaurants;
or check out the local artists on Mercury Bay’s Craft
Trail.
An enjoyable trip is the $2.00 ferry crossing to Ferry
Landing. A short walk up the hill from the ferry leads to
Front Beach, one of the bay's fabulous beaches, as well as wonderful Lonely Bay down from Shakespeare Cliff Reserve.
Alternatively you can hire a bike and explore
further, visiting popular Flaxmill Bay and Cooks Beach. Back in
Whitianga the Mercury Bay Museum contains a collection of relics
and artifacts which recall the early history of the area.

Hot
Water Beach
For a maximum of
two hours either side of low tide, you can dig in the sand for hot spring
water and make your own seaside spa pool.
Cathedral
Cove
This magnificent, secluded cove is located on the way to Hot Water
Beach. There
are several ways to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, including sea
kayaking, and shuttle bus.
